CISE Research Themes and Capabilities

Computationally-guided Predictive Manufacturing of Engineering Materials

Reliable and scalable synthesis of newly identified structural and functional materials is the main bottleneck for realizing new technologies. We use a unique combination of simulation-based "computational synthesis" with deep reinforcement learning to predictively synthesize novel materials and coatings with extraordinary properties.

Capabilities and Equipment

Tribometers

Advanced Physical and Chemical Vapor Deposition (PVD, CVD) Facilities

CISE uses some of the most advanced PVD and CVD methods to design and synthesize highly customized coatings that are well-suited for harsh operating conditions.

Tribometers

A tribometer is an instrument that helps evaluate the tribological properties of a test pair as a function of load, speed, temperature, environment, etc. In our lab, we currently have a wide range of tribometers, each capable of testing materials, coatings, and lubricants as a function of relevant or desired test parameters. All major test geometries, i.e., pin or ball on disk, high-frequency reciprocating, block-on-ring, four ball, thrust washer, tribocorrosion, and test conditions are available. Tests under normal or controlled environments, with and without electrification are also possible.

3D Optical Profilometer

3D Optical Profilometer provides advanced characterization with-customizable options and non contact 3D surface metrology.
